Navigating New Beginnings: Supporting Unaccompanied Children in Their Resettlement Journey: An introduction for Human Service Providers

This workshop provides an in-depth introduction to serving Unaccompanied Children (UC) and Unaccompanied Refugee Minors (URMs), including an overview of effective case management strategies to support their resettlement in the United States. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of key definitions, including "refugee" and "URM," as well as the complex migration processes these vulnerable youth undergo. The session will delve into the unique needs and challenges faced by URMs, including trauma, cultural adjustment, and the absence of parental support. Attendees will learn about the various services provided through the URM and UC programs, such as foster care placement, educational support, and cultural preservation. The workshop will also cover best practices for addressing mental health concerns, promoting self-sufficiency, and facilitating successful integration into American society. By the end of the session, participants will be equipped with the foundational knowledge and tools necessary to provide culturally sensitive and effective support to URMs throughout their resettlement journey.
